Winter is Coming …

The final season of Game of Thrones will be released in April, which is not necessarily Winter here in the land down under the land down under, but fairly close to it. April is about the middle of Autumn and the temperatures would be dipping once again. So yeah, winter would be on its way by April and guess what, we’re ready for it.

As you know, I’ve moved from Wellington to New Plymouth last August and a LOT has happened since I made the big change. I have been planning to post about the fantabulous views from our the conservatory of our home:

the conversion of part of our yard to a vegetable garden and the “produce” we’re growing:

the acrylic painting workshop I went to:

But I really haven’t had the time! Who knew I’d be so busy? But I digress, this post is about Winter coming (in about 6 months) and how prepared we are for it.

You see, our home has a wood-burning fireplace and you’re supposed to purchase enough firewood for your winter needs way ahead of time so that (1) you have enough time to dry the wood and (2) you don’t run out. I totally understand those two reasons. Wood takes about 3 months to dry out and as for supply – just this year, Woodwards Firewood ran out of macrocarpa and gum and were only selling pine blocks (limited quantities) to their customers. So, we decided to place our order so we’ll have enough for Winter 2019.

Since it’s my first time to order firewood, I did a bit of research diligently followed recommended volume of 10m3 for those who have 4 to 5 fires a week, found on the Woodwards website.

Hubster said we need to have a lot of gum or macrocarpa wood as these are slow burning so we don’t need to keep feeding the fire to keep it going. SO … I placed my order. Half load (3.5m3) of Gum/Pine Blocks and a Full Load (7m3) of Mac and Split Pine. Hubster said “you do know that’s a lot of wood right?” I said it’s not so his subtle hint didn’t really stop me from ordering. So yesterday, I got the fright and surprise of my life when they delivered the firewood to our home.

A bit over exposed at the top but yeah, there’s still wood there!

To make a long story short, I was carting and stacking wood from 10:30 am until about 2:00 pm – then I stopped for lunch because I was about to die, and at 3:00 pm, hubster helped me out even though he was still dreadfully unwell and sore all over. We finished stacking the wood and cleaned off all the debris by 7:30 pm. I swear I now have a renewed sense of respect for people who work with their hands. How they manage to get up after a day of hard labour – and still have the strength and energy to do it all again – is just beyond me.

Here are some photos of the stacked wood! I am so proud of myself (and of Hubster too).

When we finally run out of firewood (perhaps, by mid-winter 2020) – I’ll just order two half-loads and have them deliver these on two separate dates. That way I don’t bust my gut stacking firewood.

Have a great rest of the week everyone!

That's not exactly a flattering image. Eh! Anyway, when I'm not taking photos, I do acrylic painting or write about my adventures (and misadventures) in this wonderful journey called life. :)
